Match Report: FC Barcelona 6-2 Real Madrid

Can there possibly be words to describe last night's match? We'll give it a try...

It was simply unbelievable, to say the least. No one, not even us in all our elation and optimism when it comes to Barca, ever even thought we'd achieve this result. The score in itself is incredible, and Barca have achieved it over Real Madrid on the Santiago Bernebeu in a match that was infinitely crucial for the Liga. We've marked ourselves as sure Champions, and crushed all of Madrid's hopes for this season.

Forget that Messi has been off form in the last two matches. Forget how Puyol screwed up against Valencia. Every last player was so hot, they were positively burning. And for once, we're not referring to looks! The way they played was indescribable. So alert, so determined, so on, so there.

Eto'o is known as the main striker and goal finisher in Barca, but last night he played the role of defense magnet. Madrid's defense guarded him thickly, leaving wide open spaces for Messi and Henry to move at will. In fact, all three forwards were rotating their positions like mad, confusing the hell out of the Madridistas and attacking relentlessly.

The wings were fully manned by each of Abidal on the left and Dani on the right, each playing wonderfully well and excelling when it came to winning back possession. Puyol and Pique were both amazing, fulfilling their defensive duties and still managing to attack. Both centerbacks scored a goal apiece; now of that's not awesomeness, we'd like to know what is. Pique has been consistently spectacular on Barca for a long time now, and as for Puyol, it was like he'd been given an injection of pure power. He played incredibly hard and incredibly well.

Victor had a great match, as he often does. We fail to see why people criticize him so much; he made the most lovely saves and stops and covered up beautifully for a dangerous wrong from Dani.

Yaya Toure is forever a tower of midfield solidity, he was there doing his thing, breaking Madrid's pathetic attack and strengthening our play. Iniesta was great and filled in all the blanks, and then, and then, there was Xavi… he was all over the place, always in the midst of the action, always open, always ready, always with the perfect positioning to pass or receive or shoot the ball... he assisted four of Barca's six goals and created so many of the chances, we don't know whether to give Man of the Match to him or to Messi, as Leo was as amazing as he's ever been, fully leading Barca's attack and scoring two goals himself while assisting another.

Sure, Madrid scored the opening goal, and thought they were getting somewhere, but Titi's beautiful chip soon followed and it was apparent that Barca meant business. Madrid's push-and-shove style soon won a freekick for us, and when Xavi stepped up to take it, his shot found its way right to Puyol who rocketed it in past Casillas with a perfectly placed header, scoring his fifth goal in his twentieth Classico, in what was his 299th match with Barcelona. And we simply adore the way he whipped off his Captain's badge and kissed it in celebration.

The third goal was the incredible work of Lionel Messi, from a stupendous Xavi set-up, making us up by three goals and a two-goal difference in just the first half. Returning from the break saw Madrid scoring another, but Barca were by no means finished.

Titi scored his second and Barca's fourth from a far shot that rolled past the out-of-position Casillas and just brushed past the goalpost as it went into the net. And his second was soon followed by Messi's, again from a great Xavi pass as he sank yet another into Madrid's goal.

But the sixth and final goal had to be the best. A while back, after scoring a goal in the Copa Del Rey, Gerard Pique was interviewed and to discuss said goal. When asked where he would next like to score, Gerard replied, "At the Bernebeu." Well, the interviewer laughed and told him to stop dreaming. But Geri's dream came true. In his debut season with Barcelona, in his first ever Classico, Gerard Pique, a defender, a centerback, scored a goal against the opponent of opponents, Real Madrid, on their own pitch, in this oh so important match.

The pass came from Eto'o and Pique took the shot, which was knocked back by Casillas; however our man wasn't about to give up. He turned around and ran after it, even as Messi was approaching, and before his teammate could reach it Pique had sent the ball home, and the score was at 6-2.

The minute he scored it, the Madrid fans began to flow out of the stands in embarrassment, and history was written. Barcelona had achieved the win of wins, the result of results, the victory of victories. We absolutely humiliated Real Madrid on their own pitch, we destroyed them, tore them apart, and now, does anyone dare question the strength of this team? Bow down, oh footballing world, to the masters of this sport. Chelsea in a few days? We're not worried. Not after last night. We rule everyone. We're unstoppable.

As a final note, we'd like to commemorate the boys not only for giving this fantabulous performance, but for giving us, on top of that, the most beautiful display of celebrations after each goal and after the match. Eto'o, Pique, Messi... we're still counting the players who removed their shirts, though we're still trying to find out what Messi means by the expression "Sindrome x Fragil" that was printed on the shirt he wore underneath. Until we do, we leave you, Barcelistas, to bask in the glory that is being a fan of such an amazing team.

  1. First of all I want to thank you for this amazing barca-supporting-page. Hard to find any decent ones, but this one just fits all my needs ;)
Anyhoo, Yes this got to be one of the most amazing and well-played matches ever. It was perfect from the beginning to the end, every player was amazing, not just one or two, but every one and all [on the Barca team of course].
Pique did not make but one mistake, Iniesta wasn't tackled as much as usual, Messi adorable and Puyol a true true warrior!
    Fantastic!
And about Messi's shirt, I believe he was making ome sort of statement, trying to reach awareness to the Martin-Bell-syndrom that; "is a genetic syndrome which results in a spectrum of characteristic physical, intellectual, emotional and behavioural features which range from severe to mild in manifestation."
