How huge did this match turn out to be? The Rose Bowl was nearly completely filled, with over 93,000 filling the stands – the largest attendance ever in the United States since the World Cup final in the same stadium back in 1994. FC Barcelona: are we epic, or are we epic?
Please excuse the ego trip, we’re just too proud of our boys.
From Marquez and Henry back for their first match after injury, to Maxwell making his debut, to the ones freshly back from vacation, to Henrique and the B-teamers out to prove themselves – we’re pleased with them all – sadly barring Gudjhonsen who can’t seem to remember what his feet are for. But we won’t dwell on him, since praise is due elsewhere…
Rafa was rocking a hot haircut while Dani had his head horrifically shaved, and our excitement to see them as well as many of the usual starters playing was boundless, after it’s been all about the B-team for the past two matches. But despite the presence of Leo with the Captain’s band flashing from his arm along with the rest of Barca’s stars, the youngsters were shining throughout the match.
Wonderkid Muniesa never ceases to make us squeal delightedly, and Jonathan is proving to be a potentially incredible player. But for us this match was all about Pedro in the first half, and Jeffren in the second – just phenomenal.
Pedro grabbed the opening goal for Barca, converting a blocked shot from Messi fed to him by Sanchez; but despite Barca's dominance through the first half, Beckham scored from a freekick just before the half mark, evening out the score. Barca soon went in the lead again as Jeffren scored a screamer from a long ball by Busquets with a half hour to go, and the score stayed that way till fulltime.
But we’re not stopping at the two kids just because they whipped up the goals. Pedro owned the first half, sharp, quick and completely at ease, just rolling along like he’s been a first-teamer for a few years now, instead of the few days it’s actually been since Pep confirmed his spot on the senior squad.
And Jeffren – oh Jeffren. Apart from that goal he scored, how many shots did this guy actually take? He’s all about attack – relentless attack – relentless, strength-filled, power-surging attack. Ah-mazing. Not to mention we adore his hair.
Maxwell had a promising debut, and we’ve got a great feeling about him after seeing him play – all in all, we’re very happy with the team’s performance. The match was awesome, and crowned with the beautiful sight of more players than we could count taking their shirts off - and not just our boys, many of whom were flaunting summer tans; but the Galaxy guys as well. Titi struggling to pull off his sweaty, clinging shirt before a shirtless Becks, with Pique and Puyol strutting bare-chested in the background – now that’s a sight we’ll be keeping with us forever.
